1. Prior Preparations
Before going to hike in Half Dome hikers need to buy a permit. Permits
allow you an entry point to your Half Dome hiking, moreover it could be one of
the most important eligibility requirements to reach and explore summit.
Permits available at its Recreation.gov official website through a lottery system in advance,
if you are going through a busy (summer) season, better to book well in
advance.
2. Starting Point
Once you get permits for hiking at Half Dome, then start your journey
from “Happy Isles Trailhead” in Yosemite Valley. Often recognised as the most
beginning point of all your hiking’s.
3. Hiking Journey
Once you start your hiking journey, you must go through a more
challenging yet adventurous trail which covers about 16-18 miles round trip,
approximately 4,800 foot elevation gain. Currently Half Dome hiking follows
Mist Trail and John Muir Trail, both are ways to subdome. Sub dome is the base
of Half Dome where more scenic views of Vernal and Nevada Falls visitors can
enjoy.
4. Subdome
Subdome is a base of Half Dome, small and granite dome slabs rising
above 8,000 feet from ground level. Sub domes allow walkers to hike in more
steep and narrow path regions. Take cable to climb until sundown and to escape
from its harsh hiking journey.
5. Final Point
The last part of your hiking journey to reach its summit features the
greatest views of Yosemite Valley and Surrounding views of the Sierra Nevada
Range. It demands high safety and hikers push themselves to hike up to 400 feet
to the top.
6. Return
Once reached the summit and after exploring its epic beauties, visitors
must complete a total of 10-12 hours. So, better to start your trip in the
early morning to get enough daylight for the return journey.
What are the Safety Measures Hikers Need to Take?
Before taking a hiking journey there are some safety measures hikers have to remember. Unlike other hiking journeys, Half Dome is more challenging and requires a quick shift for constant weather conditions.
Weather is so unpredictable especially if you’re going upward and it
changes suddenly. Keeping yourself hydrated during the journey is very crucial,
therefore bring at least 4 litters of water. Bring packets of snacks or
favourite dishes are allowed, if you wish, you can take it.
It is very important to take breaks so often since it has long hiking
trails and most steep routes. Take rest when you are tired and get peace and
ambiance from your surroundings, especially during steep sections.
