The Imperial Palace of Tokyo is a historical Japanese architectural Palace made as a primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. Located in the Chiyoda ward and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and many other historical sites. It represents the symbol of the Japanese monarchy and legacy of the Japanese kingdom.
The current Imperial Palace is nestled on the former site of Edo Castle, a large and lush garden surrounded by the moats and massive stone walls in the centre of the Tokyo city.

History of the Imperial Palace
If we want to understand the historical background of the Tokyo Imperial
Palace, we should go through from 1603. Edo Castle, is a seat of the Tokugawa
Shogunate, built in the 1603 in Edo period.
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the Tokugawa Shogunate was overthrown. After this effect, the country's capital was shifted from Kyoto to Tokyo, along with Imperial residence also shifted to Tokyo. However the castle was transformed into the Imperial Palace for the Emperor.
In the year of 1888, construction of a new Imperial Palace was completed. But unfortunately during World War II, the palace was damaged and rebuilt with the combination of the original architecture and more building structures.
Imperial Palace Tickets
- Admission to the East Gardens: Is completely free.
- Inner Grounds: It usually allows guided tours and keep in mind that,
if you want to explore inner grounds you should reserve your tickets in
advance. Because areas only access certain areas via guided tours.
Hours
- East Gardens: East Gardena open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
except Monday and Friday.
- Inner Grounds: Usually explored via guided tours typically held at
specific times throughout the day. Normally guided tours are held from 10:00 AM
to 1:00 PM with advance booking.
Best Time to Visit

it's better to visit during weekends.
