History of Uluru

Let's start with the presentation of Uluru Rock of Australia from its history. As we already know how Uluru was formed? Uluru is an ancient rock inhabited by the indigenous tribal people called “Anangu”.

Uluru is a monolith red massive sandstone located in the Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, Northern Territory of Central Australia. Uluru is also called “Ayers Rock”. However they called it a most cultural and spiritual spot to them, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years.

1. Geological History

Uluru was formed around 600 million years ago according to study, made by the consistent geological process such as erosion and sedimentations. Before that a shallow sea existed there, over a period of time it was converted as a massive red rock. Interesting thing is its color, its distinctive red color of the rock comes from iron oxide in the sandstone.

2. Indigenous Tribes 

If you see the history of Uluru, land which actually belongs to the Anangu indigenous tribes. They are the real owners of this rock and land. Not just that, even today they strongly believe that Uluru is the most spiritual and holy site to them. 

Anangu people have a deep connection to Uluru from ancient times. They say that rock belongs to them even from 5000 years ago. Uluru rock is a symbol of cultural and spiritual importance’s which correlates to the daily lives of Anangu peoples. Anangu is one of the indigenous tribes in Australia. 

3. European Discovery

Place got more popularity and travel recognition after being discovered by the British explorer Wiliam Gosse. During the 19th century he gave the first document about this rock in 1873 and named it as “Ayers Rock” after Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia.

4. 19th and 20th Century

After the discovery, Uluru became one of the finest travel destinations for those who were looking to explore ancient sites and natural wonders alike. After the 20th century Uluru was designed as a frequent visiting destination in Australia, therefore they offered hiking and climbing options to the rock. But during 2019, Ananagu people referred to it and requested visitors refrain from climbing Uluru.

5. Uluru Today

Today Uluru is recognised by the UNESCO World Heritage site for its both natural and cultural importance’s. Still today the place provides valuable insights into Anangu culture, ecological importance's, Australia’s rich Indigenous heritage and importance’s of local cultures.
